Stair Climber Safety

What you need to know about stair climber safety

Safety should be a top priority with any piece of exercise equipment. By learning how to safely use a new piece of equipment, like a stair climber, you also ensure that you are using it correctly, which may mean better or quicker results.

Here's what you need to know in order to safely incorporate a stair climber into your workout.

Check with your physician

It's always wise to consult your physician if you are starting a new workout regimen, especially if you have any existing health issues like high blood pressure.

Ask an expert

Before you jump on a stair climber for the first time, have a staff member at your gym show you the basics. You will want to know how to adjust the speed and resistance levels, as well as how to activate the emergency stop, if there is one.

While you are at it, ask the staff member to demonstrate proper technique and form. If you have purchased a stair climber for your home gym, take the time to review the manual.

Be aware

It's easy to get lost in the television, radio, or even a magazine while you are working out, but it's important to always be aware of what you are doing. The last thing you want is to miss a step, lose your balance, and fall off of the stair climber.

Don't push it

If you are new to the stair climber, don't push yourself too hard. Focus on protecting your ankles and knees by using a smooth motion. Try to avoid locking your knees.

Maintain your stair climber

Proper maintenance plays a big role in stair climber safety. If the machine is in your home, consult the manufacturer or the manual to find out what's involved in keeping it properly maintained. Most likely, the stair climbers you use in your local gym are checked periodically for any issues, but it never hurts to ask the management about their maintenance routine.
